Why Female Founders Need Visibility More Than Virality

August 26, 2026

FIELD NOTES: I write about what you can't see from outside a woman's business. Where the deals come from, what she owns, how the revenue is really built. And the practical side too, because knowing how something works is only useful if you can do something with it.

This is Article 9 of the Female Founder Economy series.

In this series, I define and document the Female Founder Economy: the goals, priorities, revenue models, and growth patterns of entrepreneurial women who are building their companies primarily online. Topics explored across the series include, but are not limited to, visibility, leadership, team and scale, revenue and economic impact, emotional and mental well-being, relationship capital, and AI.

Why Female Founders Need Visibility More Than Virality

The same story keeps showing up in our community.

A solo female founder hits $10K months. Then $25K. Then $40K and beyond. She runs an agency or a coaching business.

And her following? Around 800 people.

Her best-performing Instagram reel ever?  Less than 2,000 views.

The quiet ones are often the most successful. That is not the story the internet sells women.

Virality grabs attention fast and rarely turns it into anything. When it does convert, it often creates chaos. It is the 2026 version of a Groupon deal gone wrong: too much demand, all at once, for a business that was never built to hold it. The founder ends up underwater, discounting, scrambling, burned out by her own moment. Or, more commonly, no sales to show for the massive amount of views.

Visibility with authority works the opposite way. It is slow. It offers almost no instant validation. One magazine feature here. One client testimonial there. Unfortunately, no dopamine hits are included while you chip away wondering if it’s working. Then one week a single email lands in your inbox, and it is the perfect stage in front of a room full of your ideal clients. You slowly become the only person your network recommends. It becomes a steady river of revenue and opportunity instead of a destructive tsunami.

The data backs the slow build. Edelman’s 2025 thought leadership report found that 71% of decision-makers say thought leadership is a more trustworthy way to judge a company than its marketing. Inc. put it plainly this year: in an era of overwhelmed journalists and AI search, founder visibility has become table stakes. Attention is not the asset. Authority is.

You will hear the counterargument. Harvard Business Review recently asked whether AI has ended thought leadership, now that every feed is flooded with generated content. It has not. It has done the opposite. When the internet fills with AI slop, real credibility gets rarer and worth more. And there is a simple tell between the two. True thought leadership creates conversation. AI “It’s not X, it’s Y” slop does not.

Building the slow way actually bought me everything.

I leveraged one relationship to pitch myself as a speaker at a friend’s event. At that event, a brand sponsor watched me speak, took me to coffee, and invited me onto their ambassador team. That brand was Adobe Acrobat, and it turned into one of the most lucrative and enjoyable partnerships of my year. None of it started with a viral post. It started with one room and one conversation.

That is what chasing virality and playing the numbers game costs you.

When you chase mass views, you trade away the 1:1 conversations that actually move a business: the relationships with media, brands, event hosts, referral partners, and the clients who were already ready to say yes.

I think this is downstream of the loneliness epidemic. We have gotten so used to being the broadcaster making the content or the audience consuming it that we have forgotten how to have a two-way conversation. For female founders, that habit is costing millions in revenue and opportunities that only ever come through real conversations and credibility.

A couple of years ago, we changed how The Power Table makes content. We stopped chasing anything that might earn a high view count but lead nowhere. Trending audio, inspirational quotes, and funny reels do not create depth, conversation, or a next step for our audience. We moved out of relatability and into credibility. Video podcasts. Long-form articles. Show notes with enough substance to stand on their own. Virtual and IRL events that allow people to fully experience our brand.

Things are shifting and changing for business owners who find their clients online.

So where do we go from here?

Quite frankly, AI now decides who gets found, and it rewards the founders who are citable, quoted, and credible while leaving the viral-but-thin invisible.

That should worry female founders most of all.

We have spent years being told the path to visibility is a trending sound over a clip of us sipping coffee. Be cute. Be funny. Be relatable. But the business owners who continue to follow that advice, and build content rather than credibility and authority, who will disappear first.

Virality gets you seen for a day. Visibility makes you the name that gets said in the rooms you are not in.
